BADGERS

CRICKET CLUB

Club History

In the passage below, David Harris (our Vice President) explains how the Badgers were formed and recollects the early days.

In my own case, I have been very privileged – for a number of reasons. We all have dreams, but not many of us are lucky enough to see them come to fruition.

Only Alan Figg and possibly Lynn will recall the early Badgers games in the Guildhall League when our home ground was at Ashleigh Road, where we changed in dressing rooms which sometimes had no lightbulbs, and where after the game we could change and in the gathering gloom emerge with someone else’s socks on – or worse! That team was VERY competitive, and certainly, unlike the later Badgers, not all inclusive – most of us did not have bowl and few got to the crease on anything like a regular basis.

But they also had ‘characters’. (One player once ran out 6 players in one game!!). It was during my time playing in that league that I had my dream; that you could play this wonderful game of cricket in a far more inclusive way; and provided you got the right people together who shared your dream, you could have just as much success, (eventually!), certainly more fun and probably more ‘characters’.

In the summer of 1972 it was after a discussion with Alan Figg and his friend Tim Lewis that the new Badgers were conceived. A throw away comment from Tim, who mentioned he wouldn’t be coming again, cemented my idea for a new team with a whole new revolutionary approach.

The following season I decided to experiment and after numerous phone calls got together a group of cricket lovers, a few talented (like Gordon ‘Grunter’ Caswell, a fast bowler who terrified most of the teams we played), and a lot NOT very talented! But all bought into the dream.

Gordon had been a very talented cricketer. He played in one of our early St Helens games and at a very mature age still managed to frighten batsmen who thought he was an old who just grunted as he ran up to bowl. It was Gordon who convinced me that my still revolutionary ideas for a totally ethos, was more than a dream. (Just a year or two later he had formed his own team, (with others in Sketty), and adopted exactly the same approach as I was determined to stick with).

It was at that time that I persuaded Lynn to buy into my dream and he formed his own parents’ team at Gendros in the following season. Indeed, (as Lynn will no doubt recall), for a while I wouldn’t let him join my emerging “new Badgers” side because it would mean his Gendros team might fold, thus denying the Badgers at least two of our annual fixtures.

A year or so later I moved to teach in Brynmill and persuaded talented cricketers, like Roger (at the time playing in Mumbles CC’s first team) and Lynn Evans (another exceptional cricketer) to help fulfil my dream. So together with the ever-reliable services of Alan Figg, I’d gathered a core of people who all bought into the all-inclusive approach that I’d always believed could succeed. The bonus was, that as captain, I had almost a decade in which I could decide when to bat and bowl!

Our early ‘characters’ were Gordon ‘Grunter’ Caswell, the famous (!) Smutto (who had been a regular pro for QPR), not to mention other talented people like Wynford Harries, John Hughes and Alan Jewell (a gem of a man who supported my dream every step of the way during its very early beginnings).

As I moved into my Brynmill phase, I worked hard with Roger, Lynn and Alan (3 of the best Badgers of all time) to bring in other exceptional people. We looked past their ability and at the sort of people they were. This resulted in a marvellous trawl of great characters, who ALL bought into the dream… Bill Bowen, Colin Webborn, Charlie Mason and many others….

As time went by others arrived; always on recommendation, of course…
